Seater of The Week: Mr Abdul Latif Abubakar

Meet our Sports Personality of the Week, Mr Abdul-Latif Abubakar: a hard working gentleman and the current MATESA electoral commissioner.

Mr.Latif - SOTW

Who is Mr.Latif Abubakar?(Relationship status:dating, broken up, gnashing)
Well, this question is a bit difficult to answer since day in and day out, people change and grow. But I will say Abdul Latif Abubakar is a young hard working gentleman who believes in self-discipline. Ha-ha, sure I’m dating.

Share with us your experience in secondary school. What is the worst you ever did in school you really regret.
I attended T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School, Kumasi (Real Amass). My SHS life was very fun and nice. I will say, I didn’t really struggle over there; and because I was a very hard working and discipline guy, everyone liked me. Oh not really (on the worst thing) but I think my only regret was forcing some mates to adhere to the school rules and regulations since I was a prefect.

Why did you choose KNUST over the other universities?
Yes, I chose KNUST, because I wanted to offer Materials Engineering and KNUST was and is the best choice for that. I also knew one day KNUST will be the best university in west Africa.

Materials Engineering, were you given the programme or you chose it? If the latter, what influenced your choice?
I chose it. Well, my Physics teacher used to brag a lot about Biomedical Engineering so I wanted to find something to counter whatever he was saying so I read a lot and I found Materials Engineering. So I fell for it.

Have your expectations with respect to both KNUST and Materials Engineering been met?
With KNUST, yes, but with materials engineering, I will say I’m almost there.

Given the opportunity to change something about the department, what will it be?
The attitude of certain lecturers towards us. I think there is more of dictatorship within  some of them.

Share with us some rumours you heard concerning life on university campus. Verify them.
That university was fun and there is no difficult work over here as compared to SHS. And this was a scam, ha-ha.

Assuming it is mandatory to choose a spouse from Materials Engineering, who will she be? Tell us about her.
Ampofoa Christiana on any day. She is a complete package sent from above.

Which of the current teaching assistants do you really admire? Why?
Obed Tetteh. That niggar no dey bis if he be TA or not he go vibe plus you like a day one friend.

What do you intend doing with Materials Engineering in future?
I want to dive into Polymer processing more and see if I can start a production company or solve Ghana’s sanitation problems.

Do you have any special awards? Share with us(if any). What are some of your experiences so far as Electoral commissioner? How credible was this years MATESA elections?
Oh I have some awards but to mention a few: during my final days in JHS, I was named Most Outstanding Student and Overall Best Student in the school. Also at the senior high level, I was named most hardworking prefect. I will say being an Electoral commissioner for this noble department has really helped me to make positive impact on certain people in the department. Also my way of thinking about KNUST elections has changed. I have also learnt how to uphold integrity in my life. Looking at the turnout for this year’s election I will say it was very credible. Thanks to everyone for making this possible.

Which extracurricular activity(ies) do you engage in mostly?
Playing and watching football.

Where do you want to see yourself in the next decade?
In the next decade I see myself as the owner and CEO of Lawalbi Group of companies, ha-ha. Yh keep the name in mind.

SPORTS

As the captain of the Materials Engineering team, what has been your biggest experience?
People always think that the captain is supposed to be the best player in the team. If that was the fact, then I wouldn’t be on the team at the first place lest talk of being a captain. This position has really built my leadership skills and my composure. My appreciation to my teammates.

What do you think went wrong that led to the eviction of the Materials Engineering team from the EPL?
First, I'd like to congratulate to the whole team for making it to the quarter-finals in the EPL for the first time in years. That was not the dream but Allah knows what is best for his children. We played as a team, we did our best; but as I said earlier, Allah knows what is best for his children.

Aside playing as a center back, where else can you play comfortably? Who is the toughest striker you have ever played against?
The team is already aware of my creativity as a striker but when you have the best striker in your team why should you worry yourself to fit in his boots, ha-ha. I’m still waiting to meet a tough striker, maybe I have not met him yet because I always play in the same team with him.

Name your preferred strongest line up of the Materials Engineering team.
Kwame(@saintkuban). Actually, I don’t have one. Well, I will say any team that the coach (Jude Nartey) thinks is strong for a match is my strong team at that moment.

Given the chance to choose either football or Engineering as a full-time  career, which one will you for? Why?
Engineering because I had the passion from kiddie time but I started to like football when I was about 13.

Which team do you support? What influenced your choice?
FC Barcelona. When I started following football I liked to watch nice and possessive football and I could see it only at Barcelona.

What was the humiliating defeat your team (fan) suffered that you can’t forget?
Sadly, I will say the defeat against Liverpool and every football fan is aware of this.

Give a five man line of your fan team in the order: goalkeeper, two defenders, a midfielder, and a striker.
Ter Stegen, Pique, Jordi Alba, Busquets, Messi.

Tell someone (in the department) something.
To the whole department, I will say, people look down unto us but let’s keep moving and keep focusing, for the future is bright. And to Kuban and all the guys who believe in the dream, I say the dream is scary but that’s what we want to achieve so let’s keep the fire burning.

Who is your celebrity crush?
Priyanka Chopra. She is just amazing all round.

Who is the the highest paid manager currently? Give his career pattern.
Diego Simeone. He started coaching in the year 2006 at Racing club. He moved to River Plate from 2007 to 2008 and later in 2010 he went back to Racing Club. In 2012 he started managing Atletico Madrid where he is currently.

Share with us your last words
Okay so finally I will say never stop working hard because it will surely payoff. Continue praying to your creator and he will answer you in his right time.
Long live Ghana
Long live KNUS.
Long live MATESA.

Researchers Discover New Useful Nanostructure for Composite Material

Biwu Ma, professor of chemistry and biochemistry  Florida State University researchers have discovered a novel structure for organic-inorganic hybrid materials that shows potential for more efficient technologies. Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Biwu Ma, and his team have published a new study in the journal Science Advances, that explains how they created a hollow nanostructure for metal halide perovskites that would allow the material to emit a highly efficient blue light. Metal halide perovskites are materials that have shown great potential for photon-related technologies such as light-emitting diodes and lasers, but scientists have still been working to make them more efficient and effective. "The fabrication of new-generation color displays and solid-state lighting requires luminescent materials and devices of the three primary colors: red, green and blue (RGB)," Ma said. "Although multiple ways of color tuning have been demonstrated for perov...

The Natural Polymer That Controls Life - DNA!

Some life-forms on earth. PC: Micro [5 min read] In today's post on MATESA TODAY , we want to learn about a natural polymer (giant molecule) that controls all life-forms on Earth - in plants, animals, micro-organisms, etc. This wonderful material carries the instructions that are associated with the transmission of genetic information: the shape of your nose, the colour of your eye, people's height, their skin colour, etc.  This publication gives us some basic insight into  DNA . Sounds quite biochemical, but it has got the Materials Science aspect too - Polymers; though materials scientists primarily deal with synthetic polymers. But we usually take inspiration from nature to do new stuff, more technically, develop novel products. After all, we call it genetic material ! BASIC TERMS DEFINED Polymer means "many parts" and designates a large molecule made up of smaller repeating units. Monomer is a molecule that combines with other molecules of the same ...

The Reason for The Season

Almighty, you could have snapped us into a blip to avenge for our unruly stubbornness and cruelty. You could have hypnotized us from the beginning of time to follow you with nothing called free will. No urge to disobey, steal or kill. But you chose to send your begotten son. In the beginning, you could have corrected sin and immorality yet allowed men to dwell in their carnality and later show them your sovereignty. Leaving His comfort zone, He came down to live as one of us. He was betrayed for a few denominations, chastised on several occasions but chose our salvation over condemnation. And for our sake He was condemned to death. To the wisdom of man, it was an improper fraction but to God a perfect solution.Though sinless and blameless, He bore the crossed burdened with our sins. Under the Heavy cross bathed in blood and sweat, he fell three times yet didn’t give up. He was poised to accomplish this mission of our salvation. Nailed to the cross, blood oozing from every part o...
