PERSONALITY PROFILE
Dr Emmanuel Gikunoo is a senior lecturer and Head of Department for
Materials and Metallurgical Engineering. He is popularly known as Dr Giks.
He is a Materials Engineer with exceptional knowledge in composite and biomaterials; fabrication and characterisation of materials with outstanding combination of mechanical, physical and electrical properties for use in any environment. He also has expertise in the processing and treatment of mineral deposits.
Education
He had his undergraduate studies in B.Sc. Metallurgical Engineering at the then University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana.
He has an M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Canada, where he worked on the "Effect of Fly Ash Particles on the Mechanical Properties and Microstructure of Aluminium Casting Alloy 535."
He obtained a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, USA where he worked on the "Utilisation of carbon nanofibers grown on glass microballoons (NMBs) in Point-of-Care Diagnostic devices."
He is an alumnus of St. Augustine’s College (Class of 1993), Cape Coast, where he completed his O’ and A’ Levels.
Specialities
His research areas/interests comprise:
- Fabrication of carbon nanotubes (CNTs); Immunosensors;
- Immobilisation of antibody/antigen on different substrates;
- Solid waste generation and management;
- Fabrication, characterisation, and reactivity of composite materials;
- Impact of mining on the environment, and water quality.
He has featured in many significant research contributions and prominent international journal papers.
Interests
His hobbies include soccer, swimming, reading, travelling and computers. He is the immediate past Hall Master for Unity Hall.
